How do I determine the correct glass type and thickness for a project?

The glass type and thickness will depend upon a number of factors, including:

  • Pane size (width x height)
  • Edge support conditions (e.g. fully framed, top and bottom edge supported, etc.)
  • Distance from internal finished floor level to bottom edge of glass
  • Design wind load and snow load for the project (in kN/m2)
  • Design barrier loads for the project (e.g. line load, infill UDL, concentrated load, etc.) – where the glass is protecting a difference in floor loads

The above information can be inputted into the Pilkington Mechanical Strength online calculator which is available in our MyPilkington online resource. Customers and architects can sign up to MyPilkington by clicking here.
